The technical support provided in Malawi is significantly improving the Ministry of Health’s response to Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB). This comprehensive program focuses on aligning practices with the latest World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Dr David Omotayo played a crucial role by developing training materials for the BPaLM regimen, specifically designed for managing Rifampicinresistant MDR-TB. Furthermore, the TA’s support in integrating BPaLM into the national TB guidelines led to its formal adoption, ensuring a standardized and effective approach to DR-TB treatment across the country. In addition to these strategic efforts, the TA directly supported healthcare workers by providing training and mentorship across all districts. The TA also fostered collaboration with other organizations to guarantee patients receive the necessary resources for successful treatment.

Mr Birru Shigut revamped policies, secured funding, and improved case finding through mobile X-rays. Training materials were updated, and collaboration with donors and healthcare workers increased. The TA also supported the implementation of innovative diagnostic methods for children and improved overall program quality through training and reviews. Collaboration with stakeholders like USAID and knowledge sharing at regional conferences. Overall, this comprehensive support has significantly positioned Malawi’s TB program for success in achieving its elimination goals.

This year, Malawi’s TB program saw a significant leap forward due to Mr Alison Mhazo’s technical support. Healthcare workers were trained on medication management and new treatments, while the TA also procured TB drugs and updated training materials. The TA supported the Global Fund grant review and BPaLM training to enhance TB commodity management and optimized fund usage in the country. The support included preparing for the Global fund grant closure, ensuring effective fund absorption, and updating procurement and supply systems to optimize the distribution of health commodities. Furthermore, collaboration with stakeholders like USAID was improved through joint meetings, leading to better communication and a more streamlined supply chain.

The TA helped to draft training materials for the BPaLM regimen. This not only enhanced healthcare workers' capacity in managing Rifampicin-resistant MDR-TB, but also aligned processes to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. The TA engaged with key stakeholders and supported integration of the BPaLM regimen into national TB guidelines. This led to the formal adoption of the regimen, ensuring a comprehensive approach to DR-TB management and patient care.
The TA supported the development of a comprehensive six-month work plan funded by Global Fund resources, which totalled $3.4 million. This involved crafting plans for procurement and training to ensure smooth implementation.
