Sierra Leone's TB Lab Gets a Boost: Improved Diagnosis, Enhanced Treatment A New Era of TB Diagnosis and Treatment
Sierra Leone has made significant strides in its fight against tuberculosis (TB), demonstrating the power of collaboration and technical expertise in addressing this global health challenge. With the support of the LEAP Local TA and the National TB Reference Laboratory (NTRL), the country has enhanced laboratory processes, leading to more accurate TB diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes.
Key Achievements:
Enhanced Laboratory Capacity: The TA provided strategic guidance, conducted training sessions, and helped develop essential documents, such as TB treatment guidelines, EQA guidelines, specimen transportation guidelines, and SOPs.
Improved Laboratory Quality: These efforts have culminated in the NTRL achieving a one-star rating in the Laboratory Quality Management System, up from zero stars in 2021.
Resumption of Critical Services: The NTRL has successfully resumed culture services after a four-year hiatus, expanding its diagnostic capabilities.
Enhanced Diagnostic Tools: The implementation of ten-color GeneXpert machines has further strengthened the laboratory's ability to detect TB cases.
This success story is a testament to the impact of collaboration and technical expertise. By strengthening the NTRL's capabilities, this initiative has significantly improved Sierra Leone's ability to diagnose and treat TB. The country is now better equipped to combat TB and build a healthier future for its citizens.
