The 2024 World TB Day commemorations in Namibia adopted the global theme "Yes, we can END TB." The main event took place in Luderitz District, //Kharas region, on April 11th, 2024. This region was specifically chosen due to its significant challenges related to TB, including access to care, adherence to treatment, and high mortality rates, particularly among those employed in the mining and fishing industry. Key goals included sensitizing these groups about TB, promoting screening and treatment services, reducing stigma, and enhancing public education on TB prevention.
The day featured a range of activities:
Community Mobilization and Screening: Over 3,600 individuals were screened for TB, identifying 18 new cases.
Training of Healthcare Workers: A joint effort with multiple health organizations resulted in training sessions focused on various aspects of TB management, benefiting 92 participants across in-person and online platforms.
Media Campaign: Extensive use of radio, TV, and social media helped spread key messages.
National Event: Activities included a walkathon, speeches by dignitaries, the launch of the 4th National Strategic Plan for TB and leprosy, patient testimonials, and recreational activities like soccer and netball matches.
The LEAP Advisor played a crucial role in several aspects of the event:
Preparation of Keynote Speech for the Honourable Minister of Health.
Chaired and led a training session for health workers from both private and public sectors.
Alongside NTLP and Regional Management, actively engaged in fundraising efforts by preparing and presenting requests to potential sponsors.
Developing the event's concept note, program layout, and informational and educational (IEC) materials.
Oversaw the review and printing of the strategic plan launched during the event.
